The Two Kings and the Cosmic נרתיק: A Scientific Hypothetical Interpretation of a Midrash
For millennia, Jewish tradition has maintained that the cosmos we observe today is fundamentally fractured, operating in a state of diminished spiritual and physical reality. The Torah describes an initial universe where light was perfectly balanced, a harmony that was lost and which the Messianic era is destined to restore. This restoration is described in prophecies of Yeshaya and Mal’aĉi alongside the Aggadata in the Gemara. While the era of Moshiaĉ is sometimes described as[i] עין לא ראתה – no eye has seen it, the prophecies are deliberately made vague as taught in the end of Daniel[ii] כי סתמים וחתמים הדברים עד עת קץ – for these things are concealed and sealed until the time of the end – nevertheless, we can attempt to visualize how these Midrashim might be brought about – not just in a metaphorical and moral method, but also in a quite literal way.
The Two Kings and the Diminished Moon
The foundation of this cosmic drama is found in the Gemara[iii], which addresses a deliberate textual contradiction in the Genesis creation account. The Torah first states[iv] that G‑d made את שני המארת הגדלים – the two great luminaries (implying equality) but immediately follows by describing את המאור הגדל לממשלת היום ואת המאור הקטן לממשלת הלילה – the greater light to rule the day, and the smaller light to rule the night.
Rabbi Shimon ben Pazi explains this paradox through a heavenly dialogue. Originally, the sun and the moon were created entirely equal in [apparent] size and luminosity. The moon approached the Creator and argued a point of cosmic logic: “Master of the Universe, is it possible for two kings to wear one crown?”
G‑d accepted the logic but turned it back on the complainant: “Go then and diminish yourself.”
To appease the moon, G‑d offered several consolations—the stars for company, the calculation of the calendar by the Jewish people, and the symbolic association with the righteousness of the Jewish people. However, this diminished state is a temporary exile. The prophetic tradition insists that in the Messianic era, the moon will be restored to its original glory, returning to a state of perfect equality with the sun.
Strikingly, modern astrophysical models of the solar system’s formation perfectly mirror this Midrashic narrative of a diminished luminary. According to the accepted Giant Impact Hypothesis, the moon was formed from a colossal collision with the early Earth. For the first stages of its existence, the newly coalesced moon was not a cold, passive rock, but was covered in a global magma ocean. It literally shone with its own intense, blazing heat and light, appearing as a massive, glowing red-orange orb in the night sky—quite literally, a “great luminary.” The moon’s “diminishment” was the physical cooling of this magma over millions of years into the dark, solid crust we see today, losing its original internal light to become a mere reflector. As we explore the mechanics of its Messianic restoration, we will see how this cosmic cycle might be brought full circle.
The Prophecies of Light
This ultimate restoration is explicitly detailed in two prophetic visions:
The Sevenfold Light:
Yeshaya prophesies[v] a radical increase in solar energy:
והיה אור הלבנה כאור החמה ואור החמה יהיה שבעתים כאור שבעת הימים – And the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun shall be sevenfold, as the light of the seven days…
The Consuming Fire and Healing Wings:
The final prophet [until the return of prophecy with Eliyahu] Mal’aĉi describes[vi]:
כי הנה היום בא בער כתנור, והיו כל זדים וכל עשה רשעה קש ולהט אתם היום הבא אמר ה’ צבא-ות אשר לא יעזב להם שרש וענף. וזרחה לכם יראי שמי שמש צדקה ומרפא בכנפיה – For behold today is coming, burning like an oven; and all the deliberately wicked and all those who act evil shall be like straw, and the day that is coming will light them on fire, says the G-d of Hosts which shall not leave for them a root or branch. And for those who fear my name a righteous sun shall rise healing in its wings…
The Sages in the Gemara[vii] explain the mechanics of Mal’aĉi’s prophecy with a striking image: in the World-to-Come, G‑d will remove the sun from its נרתיק – sheath or covering. Without this sheath, the raw, unfiltered intensity of the sun will be exposed, serving as destruction for the wicked but ultimate healing for the righteous[1].
The Etymology of the נרתיק and the Solar Corona
To understand what the Sages meant by the sun’s נרתיק, we must look at the word’s origins. נרתיק is a loanword derived from the ancient Greek νάρθηξ. In antiquity, a narthex was the giant, hollow stalk of a fennel plant used to safely transport glowing embers. It was a container deliberately designed to house and carry a dangerous fire.
In modern astrophysics, the sun has been observed to be surrounded by a blazing halo of plasma called the corona. While the surface of the sun burns at a relatively cool 5,800 Kelvin, the corona leaps to a staggering 2 million Kelvin[2]. How does the sun’s corona obtain and contain this unimaginable heat? This is believed to occur through magnetic flux tubes—massive, twisting stalks of magnetic energy that root down into the sun’s surface and hold the blazing plasma in place.
The Sages’ use of the word נרתיק is a spectacularly accurate poetic description of solar mechanics. The magnetic stalks of the corona are exactly alike in design and function to the cosmic fennel stalk—the sheath holding the sun’s ultimate fire. Removing the נרתיק literally means stripping away the sun’s magnetic containment, unleashing its latent energy.
Engineering the Messianic Sky: A Scientific/Midrashic Thought Experiment
When Yeshaya’s prophecy is fulfilled, it is certainly possible that the words used were not only moralistic and metaphysical descriptions of the increased righteousness of the time. The prophecy might also be meant literally; where the sun becomes seven times brighter, and the moon returns to equal the sun. If so, what would cause this to happen – other than miracles changing the laws of nature – and how does the Earth survive? Under our current laws of physics, and under the current framework of the solar system a sevenfold increase in solar energy would instantly boil the oceans and incinerate the planet. A rocky moon, if heated enough to shine like the sun, would vaporize into a cloud of gas.
However, if we introduce a single cosmic event—a massive kinetic impactor striking the moon—we can theoretically balance the astrophysics of the Messianic era. The impact would have to occur just right, and have the correct physical makeup, but the result would be a moon shining as bright as the current sun, without baking the planet, and a sun shining sevenfold without blasting away life on earth.
The Goldilocks Strike
To engineer this exact scenario, we are looking for a very specific cosmic “Goldilocks” strike.
The impact must deliver enough kinetic energy to liquefy the Moon’s interior and jumpstart a planetary dynamo, but it must stay below the Moon’s gravitational binding energy so the Moon doesn’t shatter into pieces. Additionally, the impactor needs to be made of the right materials to create the highly reflective “parasol” ring around Earth. The precise specifications [at least one scenario of which seems to work] of the object and the strike required to fulfill the model are as follows:
The Impactor Profile
- Size: 200 to 250 kilometers in diameter (about 125 to 155 miles). This is roughly the size of a large Kuiper Belt Object or a major Main Belt asteroid like 16 Psyche or Vesta.
- Composition: A “dirty snowball” matrix of water-ice, ammonia, and silicate rock. A pure iron asteroid would absorb too much heat and fail to create the bright, reflective albedo ring we need. An icy body ensures the vaporized ejecta forms a brilliant, mirror-like dust and ice ring.
- Speed: 40 to 50 kilometers per second (roughly 90,000 to 110,000 mph). This is incredibly fast, typical of a comet entering the inner solar system on a highly elliptical orbit, or an interstellar interloper like ‘Oumuamua.
The Physics of the Strike
When an object of this mass traveling at 45 km/s strikes the Moon, we can calculate the exact physics using the kinetic energy equation which will deliver approximately Joules of energy:
The Sweet Spot of a Messianic Sky
And a scenario that occurs in this fashion is an absolute mechanical sweet spot for our Messianic sky:
Surviving the Hit (The Binding Limit)
The gravitational binding energy of the Moon—the amount of energy required to blow it completely apart like the Death Star—is roughly Joules. Because
Joules is about one-tenth of that catastrophic limit, the Moon’s gravity would hold the bulk of its structure together. It survives the hit.
The Oblique Angle (Spin and Splash)
To make this work perfectly, the object cannot hit dead-center. It must strike at an oblique angle (around 45 degrees) near the lunar equator.
- The Spin: The glancing blow transfers massive rotational momentum into the newly liquefied core, aggressively churning the molten iron to jumpstart the magnetic field.
- The Splash: Instead of burying the impactor deep inside the Moon, an oblique strike acts like a cosmic shotgun. The ice and rock of the impactor flash-vaporize and are ejected outward at speeds vastly exceeding the Moon’s low escape velocity (2.38 km/s).
The Ring Formation
Objects in space do not fall straight down unless they completely lose their forward velocity. The moon is currently orbiting Earth at about 1 kilometer per second.
Because we engineered an oblique, prograde strike (hitting the moon at an angle in the direction it is already moving), the ejecta is blasted forward.
- The debris doesn’t lose the moon’s forward momentum; it adds to it.
- The vaporized ice and rock are shot out at high speeds tangentially to Earth, not directly at it.
Instead of plunging like dropped stones, the debris acts like billions of tiny satellites launched into highly elliptical, fast-moving orbits. They possess far too much lateral speed to hit the Earth’s surface.
Because the ejecta is blasted forward in the direction of the Moon’s orbit, it easily escapes lunar gravity but remains permanently trapped inside Earth’s much deeper gravity well.
Over the course of a few months, orbital mechanics would stretch this immense cloud of vaporized ice, dust, and silicates around the Earth’s equator. The water vapor would freeze into trillions of tiny, highly reflective ice crystals, locking into a stable, massive ring.
Bombardment of Evil
While the vast majority of the ejecta misses the Earth, the lowest-hanging fractions of the debris cloud will clip the upper edges of Earth’s atmosphere (the exosphere and thermosphere).
This is where the composition of the impactor saves the planet. Because we selected an icy, comet-like body rather than a solid iron asteroid, the debris is primarily water vapor, ice crystals, and pulverized silicate dust.
When the lowest fringe of this debris hits the upper atmosphere, it flash-vaporizes harmlessly. Instead of kinetic bombardment, Earth experiences the most spectacular, weeks-long meteor shower in planetary history—a continuous, harmless light show of shooting stars that effectively “trims” the inner edge of the debris cloud, preventing any large chunks from reaching the troposphere.
However, Mal’aĉi prophesized that evil people would be burnt up as if in an oven – root and branch. Accordingly, while most of the bombardment is harmless, a few nuggets of perfectly aimed meteorites can be allowed through to target evil people – killing them in explosions of superheated materials.
The Roche Limit and Circularization
Once the debris is in orbit, and the bombardment of the evil people is over, Earth’s gravity takes over to organize the chaos into a perfect ring.
As the highly elliptical orbits of the debris particles cross paths, they constantly collide with one another. In orbital mechanics, these billions of microscopic collisions cancel out the extreme high and low points of their orbits. Within a few months, the chaotic cloud flattens and circularizes directly over Earth’s equator (pulled there by Earth’s equatorial bulge).
Simultaneously, the Roche limit prevents this debris from clumping together to form dangerous new moons. Earth’s tidal forces are stronger than the microscopic gravity of the dust and ice, keeping the material stretched out in a thin, continuous, highly reflective parasol.
The kinetic energy of the impact stays safely locked in orbit. The Earth’s surface remains untouched, shielded first by angular momentum, and then by the newly formed celestial mirror.
The Reflective Parasol (The Cosmic ענני הכבוד)
This immense cloud of pulverized rock, ice, and dust thrown into a permanent ring around the Earth’s equator acts as a massive cosmic mirror. By reflecting exactly six-sevenths of the incoming light from the 7x sun back into space, the ring prevents the Earth from overheating. The planet remains perfectly temperate, shielded by a physical canopy that mirrors a physical description of the Midrashic ענני הכבוד (Clouds of Glory) that protected the Jewish people in the desert.
Removing the Sheath – Without Blowing Up the Whole Solar System
To “remove the נרתיק” in a way that aligns with both physics and the Midrashic framework, we have to target the mechanism that creates the corona in the first place. Here is exactly how the sun loses its sheath and triggers the Messianic era.
The Magnetic Scaffolding
The solar corona is not an atmosphere held down by gravity like Earth’s. Because the plasma is millions of degrees hot, it desperately wants to expand and blow away into space. It is only held in place by magnetic flux tubes—massive, twisting loops of magnetic force that erupt from the sun’s interior.
These magnetic loops are the literal נרתיק (the fennel stalks). They act as a scaffold, trapping the superheated plasma in a halo around the sun. To get rid of the corona, you don’t need to blow the plasma away. You just need to turn off the magnetic scaffolding.
The Global Reconnection (Dropping the Sheath)
The sun’s magnetic field is generated deep inside the star, in a layer called the tachocline, where the inner radiative zone meets the outer convective zone. Every 11 years, this magnetic field gets tangled and flips, causing the solar cycle of sunspots and flares.
To permanently remove the corona, the sun’s internal dynamo must undergo a permanent phase shift—a Grand Magnetic Reconnection.
- The Great Snap: Instead of a localized solar flare, the sun’s entire global magnetic field suddenly snaps and realigns simultaneously.
- The Retraction: The massive magnetic flux tubes that extend millions of miles into space lose their anchor in the tachocline. Like a snapped rubber band, the magnetic field lines violently retract beneath the sun’s surface.
- The Blow-Off: Without the magnetic נרתיק holding it in place, the million-degree plasma of the corona is suddenly uncontained. Half of it instantly blows outward into deep space on a massive, system-wide solar wind (which is exactly what hits our Moon to power the Tokamak halo).
- The Collapse Inward: The other half of the coronal plasma—along with the kinetic energy of the snapping magnetic fields—crashes inward, slamming directly into the photosphere (the visible surface of the sun).
The Origin of the Sevenfold Light
This inward collapse is the most elegant part of the physics, because it answers why the sun suddenly becomes seven times brighter. Currently, the energy that powers the corona is locked away in the magnetic fields, invisible to our eyes (mostly emitting X-rays). When the נרתיק retracts and the corona collapses, all of that latent, million-degree energy is dumped directly into the sun’s surface. The photosphere absorbs this astronomical energy spike, heating up violently. The sun’s absolute luminosity spikes by a factor of 7 (or 343, depending on the math model).
By “removing the sheath,” the sun doesn’t generate new energy; it simply stops hiding its energy in the invisible magnetic scaffolding of the corona and transfers it all to visible light.
The Visual Result: A Naked Star
If you were standing on Earth, under the protective ice-ring, looking at a sun without a corona, it would look fundamentally different from the sun we know today.
During a solar eclipse, there would be no pearly white halo, no wispy streamers of light extending into space. The sun would be a “naked” star. Its edges would be razor-sharp, a perfect, blindingly geometric sphere of pure, unfiltered light burning through the cosmic parasol, because the נרתיק is gone. The hidden energy is revealed, the moon catches the resulting solar wind to ignite its own crown, and the physical universe perfectly matches the prophetic vision.
The Tokamak Moon (Restarting the Magnetic Heart)
The energy required to melt the small, solid iron core of the Moon is relatively low, around Joules. The impact delivers 100 times that amount directly into the lunar mantle. The shockwave would instantly liquefy the core and superheat the lower mantle. The kinetic force of the impact would do something incredible to the moon itself: the shockwave would superheat and liquefy the moon’s dead iron core. As the moon rotates, this liquid metal would churn, jumpstarting a planetary dynamo and generating a hyper-powerful magnetic field.
Meanwhile, with the protective Reflective Parasol in place, the נרתיק can be removed, allowing the sun’s brilliance to increase sevenfold – blasting the solar system with a torrential rain of charged solar wind. When this super-energized plasma hits the moon’s new magnetic field, it becomes trapped.
In human physics, we use “magnetic bottles” (called Tokamaks) to suspend millions-of-degrees plasma in a vacuum so it doesn’t melt the walls of a reactor. The moon would become a cosmic Tokamak. Its magnetic field would trap the solar plasma in a tightly bound, blazing halo high above its surface.
- Because the plasma is suspended in the vacuum of space, it doesn’t touch the moon’s surface. The rocky core of the moon remains solid and cool, preserving its gravity to govern Earth’s tides and seasons.
- To an observer on Earth, this magnetic halo would burn with blinding intensity. The moon would shine with the exact apparent luminosity of the sun.
The Shared Crown
In this hypothetical reality, the night sky is entirely transformed. Because the moon is emitting light in all directions from its plasma halo, it never wanes. The concept of a “New Moon” ceases to exist; it is an eternal, perfectly full sphere. During an eclipse, as it briefly passes through Earth’s shadow and loses its solar wind supply, the moon wouldn’t go dark—it would shift into a mesmerizing, spherical Aurora Borealis of purples and greens.
True darkness is banished. By day, the Earth is warmed by a sevenfold sun filtered through a silver ring of celestial dust. At dusk, as the sun sets, the “Tokamak Moon” rises, perfectly matching the sun’s brilliance, keeping the world bathed in healing light.
Through the elegant mechanics of orbital rings and magnetic fields, physics provides a canvas for the Midrash. The two kings finally share one crown, and the diminished moon is whole once more.

Depending on what is being measured and when, that factor could be a reference to the נרתיק being absorbed back into the sun if the magnetic flux lines which contain the corona were to suddenly collapse and remain collapsed.
